Copper is a living metal, and it changes. Your bowl and bottle will develop a patina — the color will deepen, and darker spots or marks may appear on the copper surfaces. That is tarnish, it is completely normal, and it is what real, uncoated copper is supposed to do. It is not a defect, and there is nothing wrong with your set.

Why it can happen quickly: our copper is 99.9% pure with no lacquer or coating on the inside, so the surface reacts with air and water straight away. Water minerals, humidity, and even natural oils from handling can bring the patina on faster — sometimes within the first days of use. Every piece ages at its own pace, and no two will ever look exactly alike. That is part of the beauty of a handcrafted piece.

It is safe: patina is a surface change only. It does not affect the quality of the water or the set's performance, and both pieces remain perfectly safe for your pet to drink from.

A quick clean brings back the shine: if you prefer the bright finish, a gentle clean is all it takes — wash with warm water and a soft cloth, and for a deeper shine use our Perfect Polish or a little lemon/vinegar with salt, then rinse and dry well.

Because patina is a natural characteristic of pure copper — not a fault — we do not offer refunds or returns on sets for tarnish or patina development.

Why Pure Copper

Copper helps keep bacteria from growing quickly between washings, with normal cleaning. Handcrafted · BPA free & non-toxic · healthy, durable & lifetime use.

Care

Always hand wash both pieces with warm soapy water before first use. Copper is for water only. The patterned exteriors are coated to protect the design from water and daily wear; the interiors are uncoated copper.

Important: Copper Storage Disease

Certain breeds like Bedlington Terriers, West Highland White Terriers, Doberman Pinschers, Skye Terriers, and Labrador Retrievers are genetically prone to copper toxicity due to Copper Storage Disease. Females are also more prone to developing this condition than males. Although cats can develop Copper Storage Disease, such cases are exceedingly rare.
