That is tarnish, it is completely normal, and it is what real, uncoated brass is supposed to do. It is not a defect, and there is nothing wrong with your bowl.

Why it can happen quickly: our bowls are solid brass with no lacquer or coating, so the surface reacts with air, moisture and food straight away. Food acids, humidity, and even natural oils from handling can bring the patina on faster — sometimes within the first days of use. Every bowl ages at its own pace, and no two will ever look exactly alike. That is part of the beauty of a handcrafted piece.

It is safe: patina is a surface change only. It does not affect the bowl’s performance, and your bowl remains perfectly suitable for your pet’s everyday meals.

A quick clean brings back the shine: wash with warm soapy water after meals and dry well — drying is what keeps water marks and dulling at bay. For a deeper shine, use our Perfect Polish, then rinse and dry well. Most owners let the patina develop and love the character it gives the bowl; the choice is yours.
